CalSim 3.0 is a new and improved water resources planning model, developed jointly by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and the Mid-Pacific Region of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), to simulate operations of the State Water Project (SWP), the Central Valley Project (CVP), and key water resources infrastructure in the Central Valley of California and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region. CalSim 3.0 is the latest CalSim generation model following CalSim-II model (which has been used in Central Valley water resources planning studies since 2000).

The beta version of CalSim 3.0 was released in December 2017 and a two-day workshop providing a general overview of the model was conducted in January 2018.

The purpose of this hands-on workshop is to help attendees learn how to prepare and modify selected model input data, make changes to the model hydrology implementation, run the model, and analyze model output.

Topics to be covered by the workshop include:

  1. Instruction
  2. Overview of model domain and network schematic
  3. Overview of WRIMS2 Graphical User Interface
  4. Introduction to Linear Programming and WRESL language
  5. Using WRIMS2 to construct and solve simple tutorial models.
  6. Modeling project contracts and water rights
  7. Using CalSimHydro to generate hydrologic time series input data
  8. Hydrology implementation

Presenters will go over each topic by walking through a series of examples with attendees.

Important Notice – Attendees are required to bring their own laptops with the following software pre-loaded: WRIMS 2, CalSim 3.0 Model, CalSimHydro, HEC-DSSVue and MS Office with Excel. Except MS Office with Excel, all other software and models can be downloaded at CalSim 3 website https://www.water.ca.gov/Library/Modeling-and-Analysis/Central-Valley-models-and-tools/CalSim-3. Prior to the workshop, links to the examples used in the workshop will be provided.

It is strongly recommended for those who did not attend the CalSim 3.0 beta release workshop in January 2018 to go to the CalSim 3 website and view the workshop video recordings in advance as preparation for this hands-on workshop.
