Overview
DWR’s flood system improvement efforts continue to reduce flood risk in California.  To support decision making for these efforts, DWR has developed models of flood hazard, flood consequence, flood management system operation, and economic and life risk within the Central Valley. The objective of this workshop is to describe those models, including their development, availability, and use. Application of the models for floodplain mapping, economic risk analysis, and flood management planning will be demonstrated. To the extent feasible, attendees will use the models, datasets, and published results of application for illustration.

• Day 1: Hydraulics-focused with emphasis on CVFED riverine modeling (HEC-RAS) and floodplain modeling (FLO-2D), including demonstrations. Overview of the objectives of FloodSAFE modeling activities, procedures, and models used. (NOTE: this will not be a tutorial on using HEC-RAS or FLO-2D. Attendees should be familiar with both)

• Day 2: Hydrology-focused with emphasis on CVHS development, models used, and results. Discussion and demonstrations of unregulated flood flow frequency analysis, rainfall-runoff-routing, and transforming unregulated flood flow frequency curves to regulated flood flow frequency curves. Attendees will be introduced to DWR’s Library of Models and learn how to access FloodSAFE models and data sets.

• Day 3: Risk analysis and plan evaluation. Demonstrations of system-wide economic risk analysis, ecosystem benefits analysis, and change in risk attributable to levee and bypass modifications, reservoir re-operation, and enhanced flood warning. (NOTE: this will not be a tutorial on using HEC-FDA. Attendees should have at least a novice-level understanding of risk analysis concepts).
